Use of Patient Photographs

Comply with the HIPAA Privacy Rule when using patients photos

Recently, we have had multiple questions regarding the use of patient photographs is the office.

As a reminder:

In your practice you may need to photograph patients for treatment purposes. The usage of
photographs is within the HIPAA Privacy guidelines as long as these photographs are kept in the patient’s chart. If you wish to use the patient’s photograph in a place where they can be seen by the public, either for use as a demonstration of your practice’s skills and techniques or for general interest usage, the patient’s signed authorization must be obtained.
